When building owners and managers contact the Hygiene Inspection Body for Water Systems (DIN EN ISO / IEC 17020 accredited Inspection Body), a hygienic problem and a microbial contamimation with Legionella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aspergillus fumigatus, non-tuberculous mycobacteria, or other waterborne microorganisms within a building already exists in many cases.
Even when the water is clear and transparent, microbial or chemical contamination can be present. Only appropriate analytics can provide clarity about the water quality and not the makroskopic appearance of water. In several European countries the law requires the development and implementation of a Risk Assessment, when Legionella spp. concentration in water samples has exceeded specific concentrations (in Germany 100 colony forming units / 100 ml (100 CFU/100 ml); in the UK a Risk Assessment for Legionella is always required, when a building has water systems. The development of Risk Assessments for healthcare and non-healthcare buildings has been our specialisation since 2004.
Our team is your partner for water hygiene compliance and management with the accreditation for our competency and independence. We act globally and are acquainted with global laws and guidelines.
How to choose a consultant for Risk Assessments and Water Safety Plans?
Risk Assessments, Water Safety Plans and the creation of sampling plans are reports and activities that require Authorised Experts.
When looking for Authorised Èxperts, we recommend the following:
- Ask for proof of competence before commissioning eg education, certification of further education and specialisation
- Ask for proof of independence: An expert who creates a Risk Assessment has a conflict of interest, when he/she audits their own Risk Assessment; a company that sells chemical treatment has a conflict of interest, when creating a Risk Assessment or Water Safety Plan or a sampling plan to check whether their recommended methods has been successful
- Ask for confirmed references for the requested service
- Ask for documents of indemnity insurance as Authorised Expert offering „Audits and Expert‘s Reports“ and „Risk Assessments“
- Is the Risk Assessment, Water Safety Plan or other document created for the specific building or is it based on existing check lists? In case of use of existing check lists we recommend the rejection of the commissioning
The Hygiene Inspection Body for Water Systems (DIN ISO / IEC 17020 accredited Inspection Body) receives regularly requests about planning or supervising remedial works on water installations. Due to independency reasons and compliance with the Type A accreditation policies, the activities of the Hygiene Inspection Body end with the identification of the technical deficits and contamination sources.
